Comprehensive Lighting Upgrade

Voltari was contracted to perform a full lighting rewire for a generator repair facility operated by Wernick. The project encompassed a 25m x 12m warehouse facility, marking a significant upgrade from outdated lighting systems to modern, energy-efficient solutions.

Project Overview

The primary task involved replacing the existing 400W low bay fittings with 18 new LED UFO low bay fittings, which led to a significant 75% reduction in the facility's energy consumption.

Additionally, during the rewire, it was discovered that live conductors were exposed and not adequately protected. This issue was promptly addressed by enclosing the conductors in a whiska box for enhanced safety.

The project also included adjusting the angling of an external floodlight to address concerns from local farmers about being dazzled by the light.

Client Challenges

The generator repair facility faced several challenges that necessitated this upgrade:

1. Outdated Wiring: The existing wiring was over 25 years old and desperately needed to be upgraded to meet current safety and efficiency standards.

2. Energy Consumption: The facility was using high-energy-consuming 400W low bay fittings, which were not energy-efficient, leading to unnecessarily high energy bills.

Our Challenges

Voltari encountered a few challenges during the execution of the project:

1. Access and Safety: The warehouse's high ceiling required careful planning and execution to safely install the new light fittings.

2. Operational Continuity: The facility needed to maintain lighting throughout the project to ensure continuous operation without disrupting their business activities.

3. Specific Material Requirements: The project specifications included the use of SWA cable, necessitating careful sourcing and installation given the nature of the facility's operations.

Solutions Implemented

To address these challenges, Voltari implemented several key solutions:

1. Use of MEWPs: Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) were utilised to safely access the high areas for the installation of the new LED fittings, ensuring the safety of the workers and the integrity of the installation.

2. Parallel Systems: To ensure the facility remained operational with adequate lighting, two systems were run in parallel. This approach allowed one system to be decommissioned while the other was being commissioned, ensuring no disruption to the facility's operations.

3. Customisation for Safety: Exposed and unprotected live conductors were safely enclosed in a whiska box, addressing a critical safety concern and ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards.

Client Feedback

The client's feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with a representative from the generator repair facility operated by Wernick stating, “Thanks for making it painless!” This feedback underscores the effectiveness of Voltari's approach in ensuring a smooth and efficient upgrade process, minimising disruption to the client's operations while significantly improving their facility's energy efficiency and safety.

Conclusion

Voltari's project for the Wernick end user, facilitated through H-Lec, exemplifies the successful upgrade of a critical industrial facility's lighting infrastructure. By addressing safety concerns, ensuring operational continuity, and significantly reducing energy consumption, Voltari demonstrated its capability to deliver complex electrical projects with high standards of safety, efficiency, and client satisfaction. This case study serves as a testament to Voltari's commitment to excellence in the field of electrical contracting and energy-efficient solutions.
